This week’s guest post is from the President of The Earth Organization, Barbara Wiseman – if you’re considering taking a vacation where you can go to Africa and really get away from it all but you can’t possibly imagine leaving work fully behind, check out this great experience of the perfect work week!
Marissa has worked with me for 3 years as my personal assistant primarily out of Los Angeles office. We were in South Africa on other business when we were offered a luxury cabin for several days at Thula Thula, the exclusive private game preserve created by world-renowned conservationist Lawrence Anthony and his wife Francoise, which offers a wonderful wild safari vacation. We had an intense deadline to get several important articles written and knew that, now that we had to go to Africa, it would take 5 days to finish our work, so we grabbed the chance to work uninterrupted in this paradise.

Our eco-safari cabin was right on a waterway that meandered by our spacious deck. Covered for shade, the comfy furniture, wi-fi, and spectacular views from every angle gave us a perfect environment for work and pleasure. That deck became our office, dining room, and lounge for the next five days and we hardly left it even for a wild safari; eating all our meals there, generally glued to our laptops, and from time to time jumping up to catch the best possible view of strolling giraffes or cavorting monkeys—that’s why most people go to Africa, right? And at night, the Milky Way was so thickly laden with stars they could have called it the Creamery.

To be honest, there were a few eco-safari interruptions…like the morning ritual a family of hippos had of slowly making their way downstream to a pool just beyond our place where they would hang out for a few hours before making their way back for our wild safari. You could hear them coming, blowing bubbles, and puffing the water out loudly each time they surfaced. With two youngsters in tow that looked to be about 4 months old, we were charmed and hit the pause button on our work so we could go to Africa, reveling in the show whenever we saw them.
Then there was the afternoon snooze that two of the pool’s crocs pretended to take, helping to complete our eco-safari whilst sunning themselves on the opposite shore and playing Mexican Standoff with a long-legged crane. While I had always thought of crocodiles as monstrous, the kind you would avoid on a wild safari, there was something so perfect about them being there that I found myself utterly fascinated, and was surprised to gain a deep admiration of their awesome beauty.
This was one week at work I will never forget. Ever.
Join us in South Africa for your own magnificent and unique experience in June or September!

Mysterious Africa, the cradle from which humans emerged, rich geographic and biological diversity, is the perfect place to visit when you want to get in touch with the great outdoors. The concept of the Safari originated in Africa and it is home to some of the best nature reserves in the world, where you wake up to the roar of the lion and explore the majestic grasslands, breathtaking deserts and stupendous waterfalls.
Though most of us may have dreamt of one day going on a genuine African Safari, the many unknowns of travel planning in Africa ensure that few of us ever make it. Here is a guide to some of the must see destinations around Africa.
1. THE OKAVANGO DELTA. Botswana.
The Okavango River has the world’s largest inland river delta covering over 17,000 Sq Km. A labyrinth of surprisingly clean and pure lagoons, lakes and channels, its expansive gently moving waters, attract elephants, zebras, blue wildebeest, giraffes, lions, leopards and the spotted hyena.
Camps are well camouflaged, built to blend into the environement and not disturb the delicate balance of the ecosystem here. The Abu Camp, Bains Camp and Mombo camp are well worth a visit.
2. MOUNT KILIMANJARO, Kenya.
Kenya is home to the largest concentration of free roaming wild life in the world. The originator of the Safari, Kenya has been the backdrop of many famous movies and books. Mt. Kilimanjaro, formed by a dormant volcano that rises majestically from the Great Rift Valley, offers the adventure of mountain climbing as well as encounters with its abundant wildlife. The Chyulu Hills National Park is a great place to explore its underground caves and see black rhino, buffalo, elephant, leopard and lion.
The Maasai Mara National Reserve is home to the Big Cats, and is the place to view the great migration of Zebra, Thomson’s gazelle, and wildebeest. The Mara Safari Club, Ol Donyo Lodge and Giraffe Manor are popular places to stay at while on your Kenyan Safari.
3. THE KALAHARI DESERT, South Africa.
South Africa has been blessed with an abundance of natural riches. A visit to this wonderful country may include different interactions with the wild, from the Sabi Sands/Kruger area, the wild life reserves like the Madikwe Game Reserve to the desert experience in the Kalahari.
Sparsely populated the Kalahari has an untouched beauty all its own. The southern regions of this desert receive some rainfall and consequently are home to a variety of flora and fauna such as lions, meerkats, giraffes, jackals and kudu. Popular game reserves in this area are Khutse Game Reserve and the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. Covering 250000 acres the Tswalu reserve is the largest private game reserve in South Africa.
4, VICTORIA FALLS, Zimbabwe.
A UNESCO World Heritage site the Victoria falls are amongst the most breathtaking waterfalls in the world. They measure 5,604 ft in width and are 354 ft high. An abundance of wildlife along the Zambezi River makes this an amazing safari destination. Boat Cruises take you up close to hippos and elephants and a stay at the Ruckomechi camp in the Mana Pools National Park on the river Zambezi is a unique experience.
Other great places to stay at close to the falls are the Victoria Falls Hotel, and the Elephant Camp. Zimbabwe’s largest game reserve, Hwange National Park has more traditional game drives and Little Makalolo is a great place to explore from.
5.ODZALA KOKOUA NATIOANL PARK, Republic of Congo.
Odzala only second to the Amazon in its expansive rain forests, is amazing in its biodiversity. With the largest population of Western Lowland Gorillas the Odzala Kokoua National Park is stunning, the Lango and Ngaga camps that were established just this month are a wonderful base from which to explore this part of the Republic of Congo (Not to be confused with The Democratic Republic of Congo)

So you’re thinking about finally going for that african safari vacation packages you’ve always dreamed of and now it’s time to research guides and gear and outfitters and the like? Maybe you’re looking for general tips or answers to specific questions or concerns? The Internet is a veritable fount of information and I’m confident you’ll find all that you need. It isn’t my purpose to instruct you on how to plan a safari, who to sign up with or to provide an item by item list of what to pack; I simply want to offer a few really basic (but can’t be stressed enough) pointers.
1. You can’t possibly conduct too much research into your safari package provider or what to expect on safari itself. Do your homework and be well prepared.
2. Get vaccinated. Seriously. I don’t care how much you hate needles, go to a doctor who is well versed in travel health and take whatever (s)he wants to give you. Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid and Yellow Fever. Consider a prophylactic anti-malarial treatment and stock up on Mosquito repellent with DEET.
3. Pack lightly but appropriately. You’re not vacationing on the French Riviera and safari is no place for stilettos. Research what you’ll need and leave everything else at home.
4. Drink, drink, drink. No, I’m not referring to alcohol but water. Your guides will know what water is safe to drink and what is not but in either case, bottled water is usually plentiful. Dehydration is among the top complaints of safari guests, which is silly because it is easily avoidable.
5. Do as you’re told. Your tour organizers, drivers and guides live this life day in and day out. They care about your safety – no one wants to lose a tourist on their watch, it’s bad for business. So listen to and follow their instructions to the letter. Oh, and never wander off. Trust me on this one.
6. Wild animals are, by definition, wild. Observe but don’t interact. Never approach or try to feed any untamed animal. Try not to draw attention to yourself lest you end up looking like you’re competing for territory or breeding rights. Worse yet, you may inadvertently offer yourself up as dinner.
With adequate preparation and a little common sense your African Safari will likely prove to be the best vacation of your life.

In this two-part series, we’ll learn the fundamentals of North and South African cooking, covering some of the most celebrated flavors and dishes of this vast continent. For the second class in the series, we’ll look at South African cuisine, which has some of the lesser known dishes in Africa. Influenced by European and Southeast Asian cuisine, some of these dishes will taste of flavors you’ve never had before! Fire roasted and grilled specialties that reign from tribal culture and meat dishes that use English and Dutch cooking traditions will sit alongside Indian and Malaysian-style curries, that all combine for distinctly South African flavors! Often referred to as the “rainbow cuisine” this class truly shows what the word fusion is all about. With each dish prepared, some history will be discussed so you leave feeling you’ve not only discovered new aspects of the South African cuisine, but have a new understanding of the culture as well!

I want to share a few comments about the wonderful adventures my wife and I have experienced on multiple Africa Through the Lens safaris led by Randy and Kathy Hanna. Finding the right words to capture the essence of an experience of this nature is nearly impossible, but without a doubt these photo safaris were life-altering events for us in a very positive manner. We approached these safaris with very high expectations, yet Randy and Kathy, along with the wonderful support staff from Thomson Safaris, managed to exceed those expectations in every way.
As amateur photographers, having immediate access to an experienced professional photographer, while in the middle of some of the best photographic opportunities in the world, was invaluable. Randy freely shared his expertise, doing so in a manner that benefited everyone to include the novice photographer. In the end, Randy ensured everyone (photographers and non-photographers alike) walked away with a wonderful experience and “once in a lifetime” photos.
While photography was a big part of these safaris, the experience involved so much more. The opportunity to meet the people of Tanzania, see the landscape, and get the “red dust of Africa” on our boots, changed us forever.
I have been on three Africa Through the Lens safaris with Randy and have a fourth scheduled, so I guess you can say I’ve been bitten by the “African Bug”. Anyone looking for a life-altering experience with an emphasis on photography cannot go wrong with a Thomson Safari Africa Through the Lens adventure led by Randy and Kathy Hanna.

What is there not to enjoy on a 25-day safari in southern Africa?
Join Eric Moore for his program about the 25-day adventure he had in 2009 on safaris in the African countries of Botswana, South Africa and Lesotho. At our May 16 (Sedona) and 17 (Flagstaff) meetings, Eric will wow us with photos of some of the more than 300 bird species he saw on this trip of a lifetime.
Eric also had spectacular mammal sightings and was taken by the coloration and patterns of zebras. He said that he enjoyed the elephants, water buffalo and even the wart hogs, adding, “What is there not to enjoy!?”
In Maun, Botswana, he hired Planet Wilderness, a local tour company, to create a custom birding safari just for him. In South Africa, he met up with his son, Jeremy, who he had not seen for two years while he was serving as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Father and son visited several wildlife parks there and spent two amazing days in Kruger National Park.
The two spent the last week in the small mountainous kingdom of Lesotho, where they hired a local guide to take them into the remote back country where few tourists ever visit.
Eric is the owner of Jay’s Bird Barn, a business that specializes in backyard wild birds and nature, with two locations: Prescott and Sedona. He has been bird watching since he was a young child growing up in western Massachusetts. At age six he moved to Arizona where his love of birds soared to new heights. Eric’s trip to Africa in 2009 was his first experience traveling abroad and he has since traveled to Brazil where he saw over 400 bird species.
